The waiting period begins!
The waiting window is now open and will last until March 31, 2026. During this special period, the organizers of the Nazaré Big Wave Challenge monitor conditions at Praia do Norte, waiting for the perfect moment to start the competition. The waves need to reach the right height and power, while wind and tides must be favorable. This ensures that surfers can compete in safe yet extreme conditions, and spectators get the chance to witness the giant waves in all their glory.
WSL may announce:
Big Wave Yellow Alert – issued up to 72 hours in advance, signaling that the event may be activated.
Big Wave Green Alert – confirms that the competition will take place within the next 24 hours.
